For two decades, the Center for Urban Transportation Research has advised Florida policymakers on how to spend billions of taxpayer dollars to improve the state's overwhelmed transportation system. The University of South Florida think tank says every transportation option it examines undergoes a rigorous and objective analysis. It says it plays no favorites. But a St. Petersburg Times analysis shows CUTR has often criticized one type of travel passenger rail while promoting alternatives it is paid millions to study. -- One of rail's biggest critics gets millions to study and promote alternativesA question unasked is why DOT believes that CUTR can do better studies than DOT can in-house? If they want opinions and studies from different sources, are they spreading around the wealth to other "think tanks?"Hit tip to Sticks of Fire - cutrs anti-rail stance questioned

That includes you, readers. And I'm thankful to live in a country that acknowledges the right of a loudmouth like me to be loudmouth.Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Actually, Jack Myers Loves Government

Posted: 25 Nov 2009 06:01 AM PST
http://www.lakelandlocal.com/2009/11/actually-jack-myers-loves-government/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

I read with some interest a few weeks ago that Polk County Commissioner Jack Myers plans to run for Paula Dockery's Florida senate seat. I read with particular interest his brief rationale for running:"Everyone needs jobs. Everyone needs less government," Myers, a Republican, said Saturday. Ah yes, less government. If there's anything Jack is about, it's less government. Riiight. For starters, after running hard against the relatively modest gas tax approved by the 2000 County Commission, he voted in 2005 for the largest tax increase in Polk County history.

The first time I made this was back in 2005 from a church cook book. Not sure who gets the credit, but I did not create this recipe. When you go shopping be sure to take your green bags! Happy Cooking.1 (10 3/4 oz) Can of Campbell's Fiesta Nacho Cheese Soup*4 Cups cooked cut green beans (4 cups = 2 cans) If you get canned green beans it's ok to get no salt added, you can't tell the difference when all mixed...3/4 cup milk1 1/3 cups French's french-fried onions1/2 teaspoon pepper(keep reading to see how to make...)

Not sure how many of you do your shopping at Publix on 33 but as of 7pm they were out of cans of pumpkin. Also the Winn-Dixie on Hwy 92 is out as of 7:25pm. Be sure to buy early for your cooking needs. One associate at Winn-Dixie said Wal-mart bought 90 percent of the local supply. If it's true I don't know but he said it with frustration. I called the Highland City Publix to see if it was in stock and yes it is! Happy Holidays to you.

It's that time of the year. Forget old-school sugarplums, children are tucked in with visions of FurReal and Wii in their heads. Santa is changing with the times as well. In this age of email birthday "cards" and voicemail breakups, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Santa is spending less time listening in person at the mall. He now phones the little ones to check his lists against their current wishes. (He has a great unlimited calling plan.)It also should be no shock that St. Nick has outsourced the calls to a cadre of specially trained long distance operators. (Who, since the advent of international direct dialing, are greatly underutilized. Most would be out-of-work save for the very strong LDO union. Very strong. Hoffa crossed them. Once.)Economic and sociological changes aside, a memo from the City of Lakeland has announced that our little Lakeland elementary school tykes should expect their calls Tuesday, December 8th from 5:30pm to 8pm.

Be a patriot, JD: Divest from your CSX-related holdings

http://www.lakelandlocal.com/2009/11/be-a-patriot-jd-divest-from-your-csx-related-holdings/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

As I was driving home last night, I heard a WUSF report in which Sen. JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales, waxed patriotic about how it's our duty to support our troops by approving Sunrail. Yes, really. The idea is that the 3,000 daily riders of SunRail will help us wean ourselves from foreign oil, thus making it less likely that our soldiers will need to fight in the Middle East. I wish I could find a link because the actual statement, in his trembling voice, is moving. Given Alexander's obvious deep feeling for the common good of our state and soldiers and his solemn belief that the CSX/SunRail deal is so vital to both, I expect an announcement any day that he's divesting his vast personal business interests in this deal. See them detailed here. Of course, it's just a coincidence that the Winter Haven rail hub CSX will build as part of this deal with $23 million or so of your money will serve JD's personal business interests and those of his partners. With a deal this important to our future, this important to our troops, I'm sure that JD will want to remove any taint that might surround it. That's what a patriot does.

In the education post both Carol and I start with this Gallup poll that shows a very high satisfaction rate (77%) with how schools are educating children. Parents generally think their child is getting a good education. But those other kids? The poll shows that only 46% are satisfied with education in the country.

What accounts for this discrepancy?
Im willing to bet that its our news media, aka MSM, including newspapers, cable news, and broadcast news.

A Simple Question for Polks Republican Officials and Candidates: Did ACORN Steal the 2008 Election for Barack Obama?

This is a truly astonishing poll. 51 percent of Republicans think that pathetic little ACORN engineered a massive conspiracy to turn the 2008 presidential election into an electoral college rout. Only 27 percent are sure Obama actually won. We live in pretty Republican county here, so I want to know what the people's representatives and would-be representatives think: Do you agree with a majority of your party that ACORN stole the 2008 presidential election? If not, does this level of delusion within your party concern you? Email me at bitown1@gmail.com. I will be tracking all of you down for an answer, so you can save time and effort by emailing first.

Kicking Off Christmas Giving

The familiar red pots will soon pop up in front of area stores. Tonight, the Salvation Army of Western Polk County will kick-off the local Red Kettle campaign with an event at Lakeside Village. From 6pm to 7pm, as Christmas music fills the air, six teams of local leaders will encourage shoppers to drop spare change, and the occasional helpful bills, to benefit Salvation Army programs. The event will open with Santa arriving riding the "World's Largest Kettle" to help light the Lakeside Christmas tree. After the kick-off, the Salvation Army will set up the red kettles at area businesses. The Salvation Army reports that a portion of the funds collected will "provide gifts and food boxes for thousands children in local families."All of these services are made possible through the generosity of this wonderful community, says Captain Stan Colbert, Corps Officer. With the help of our community, we are confident we will reach our 2009 goal of $150,000.00 and be able to reach out in a meaningful way to the less fortunate again this year. Those interested in volunteering to help the kettle campaign can call Major Jim Robbins at 863-899-5456.

Today marks the start of a collaboration of a few Central West Central Florida hyperlocal sites, beginning with Chuck Welch's Lakeland Local and Metro I4 News, and Tommy Duncan's Sticks of Fire. These three sites have covered the goings-on of Central Florida for over 10 years. Over the past two months we've discussed how we could increase coverage of our neighborhoods, while not completely lose touch with our families. We'll borrow freely from each other's expertise. Chuck is a sitesmith. He's been known to force a Wordpress theme or two into submission. Tommy is a passionate observer of society, who is excited about the possibilities of several folks working together. However, we are both are first, and foremost, writers. We will continue to cover our home areas of Tampa, St. Pete, Lakeland, and Polk County. In the coming weeks we'll expand from primarily geographical coverage to add a topic site on the nuts and bolts of hyperlocal publishing. We also hope to work with other Central Florida sites to expand news coverage, ideas, and expertise. For now though, we're starting slow. We've started with a new design for all three sites. Inside you'll still find the same strong reporting and photography you've enjoyed. We're hoping it'll be easier to navigate and find some articles you might have missed. We'll make tweaks over the next few days as we get reader feedback. So don't be shy. You can contact Tommy or Chuck or just leave a comment here.

A jobs summit to be hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House next month would be a good forum for such an address. Obama is right when he says, Its important that we dont make any ill-considered decisions even with the best intentions particularly at a time when our resources are so

Can You Find Me Now? Verizon, T-Mobile and Alltel Stores Move

See if you can follow this. The Verizon store is now a T-mobile and the Alltell sign has now changed over to a Verizon sign. The Verizon store that was in Lakeland Commons (across from the Imperial Swan hotel), as of Tuesday, is now a T-mobile store. Verizon moved a few blocks up as is now in the same building as Lenscrafters at 3406 S Florida Ave, 33803. The new Store phone number is 863-644-8800. Hope this helps you the next time you are looking for the closest phone store, if they are your provider. I would also like to add that the inside of the Verizon store is very nice and modern looking, almost futuristic. When you go inside you check in at the kiosk, then wait for your name to be called. The days of someone greeting you with How may I help you are almost gone. Although a nice gentleman helped me sign in.

According to city officials, this morning Patrick Jones withdrew from his campaign for Lakeland SE District D. Jones was the last candidate on the ballot to challenge commission Edie Yates in her re-election bid. That forces the city to schedule yet another special qualifying period to give interested persons the opportunity to run against Yates.City officials have proposed ending the new qualifying period on November 20, 2009 at Noon. If anyone qualifies to run, they propose a special election to be held on January 5th. The Lakeland City Commissioners have set a special meeting for Friday, November 13th at 8am to vote and officially set the dates.
